Sari Sisters share their thoughts

Thanks to all of you for your kind words! You make it all worthwhile

Ende Sariwalli,
I just received my green/tangerine gadwal and the green/red narayanpet in the mail. It feels like Christmas...the anticipation (of the mail man coming), the thrill (at finding the packages inside the mailbox), the joy (of trying out the new saris)! Thank u for making this possible. I can see that you do choose all of your saris with care. Each piece is definitely hand-picked. Keep up the good work.
P.S. My daughter thinks the bindis are all hers. She's happy too :)

At this, my latest count, I have 117 sarees (nearly all hemmed, save a mere few) 97 of the saris are for my wearing pleasure; 20 are at my windows making them beautiful and the most unique in the neighborhood, so much so, that friends of mine are planning on purchasing their very own for windows. Some have their original tags, still....some with the makers tags, of all things...imagine a heavy silk ikat with its red bordered sticker proclaiming it was a mere $ 29.00.

Still others have finally been fully unfolded for the first times; their contrasting and elaborate pallus causing my eyes to light up and exclamations of wonder to be elicited....

All have reminded me of fabulous places I have worn them; one of which was a very elaborate South Korean wedding --- an extremely elaborate zari encrusted silk satin Benarasi with green, red, gold, blue and purple. (Many years old and still enchanting).... I particularly recall all conversation ceasing in 4 different languages as I walked up, proudly escorted by my husband. The bride, most elaborately attired of all, beamed in delight, and asked me where I'd procured such a "gown".

There is the heavenly sky blue zari embellished silk I wore to a party and that my husband photographed me wearing shortly after we married. The photo is on your web site.

Of course I cannot forget that there are the sturdy cottons worn for gardening and walking the trash bins to the street curbs-- those too make conversations stop and hellos ring out from up and down the block.

Special saris in rare colors with myriad embossed borders jump out at me and remind me that one day, they will be worn my daughter; I wait for her interest to burgeon and grow and her dignity to be enhanced by ones I have picked just for her since her early girlhood days.......sometimes I think of which one I might wear to her engagement and wedding. I wore one the day she turned 18 and then another for her graduation.

Where would all these prized moments be remembered more suitably than within the weaves, colors and textures of my precious saris? No cloth is more worthy of sweet memories!

I was wearing my favorite sari (brown cotton with blue/green/blue stripes and gold shot Pallu) and hennaing a group of 16 year olds. They loved the sari and the henna, yes I gave them my black henna is death talk (...oh sorry for a moment I thought this was a henna site). All went well and the henna I smeared on my sari came right out in the wash.

On the way home, having completly forgotten that EVERYONE isn't in saris in northwest Washington state, we stopped at the gas station.I went in to get directions back to the freeway and I just couldn't understand why everyone was staring at me!

I can only imagine what the poor guy behind the counter was thinking...'yes you ARE lost, you are looking for India' is my guess. Since then I have given my bridal henna artist a beautiful sari (from this site, I tell all my friends about it), gotten married in a green silk sari (that was my first buy) and draped the pants for my new husband (who is willing to have henna AND wear saris, I'm so lucky) . I now want to wear them all the time, and my tip is to use a light gauze skirt as a peticoat (thank you Value Villiage $4.99)! Karen F.

I just wanted to say thank you. I just recieved the 3 saris I ordered on saturday morning and they are all absolutely gourgeous! I couldn't believe they were on my doorstep monday when I got home from work. I just wanted to say I love your website and I am thrilled to have found it. Pretty cotton saris are so difficult to find, I am sure I will be a repeat customer.

[chuckle] I realize I must flood your inbox with all my letters... oh well, I guess I'm showing the love for my favorite sariwallah ;D

Thank you thank you for the gorgeous saris!!! These past three were stunning. They always are. I promise to wear them out and have lots of fun with them this summer. Not sure when my next order will be or when I'll be in contact... just wanted to say thank you (I think I've e-mailed quite a bit with all the thank you's!!) and look forward to many years of happy sari trails!!
A hearty namaste,
Bhakti lata

I have just received my 9-yard red cotton sari and am absolutely thrilled -- thank you! It is even more beautiful than I had imagined from the picture on the website. Can I also praise your prompt service? I am still waiting on saris ordered from other sites a month ago, but yours only took a few days.
Nora

Dear Melinda: Greetings. We received the saree parcel yesterday ( wednesday 6th ). The sarees are absolutely fabulous and so much to my taste. I could not resist the temptation to get some more; and I have placed an order today for three Guntur sarees ( for their simplicity and sheer elegance) and for one orissa Bomkai green - for the quality of the fabric and the colour.
Best wishes. Leela

I just wanted to tell you that I love your website and the saris that I've purchased from you. I marvel at the beauty and quality of the saris and have received many compliments. Your website is beautiful, too! I look at the site about every other day! I also need to tell you that there were two saris that I promised myself when I felt I could splurge. Of course I became a victim of the "you snooze, you lose" syndrome and they departed a few weeks ago. Perhaps you will get more?

I love the cotton saris because they are easy to wear and easy to "get away with" in WASPy conservative Massachusetts suburbia. The shot-weaves make the colors even more interesting and I find the baluchari figures beautiful. All in all these saris are an artistic feat! I savor them like I savor a good painting: talent, skill and beauty combined to become something spiritual. I'm so glad that you do this and to be honest I'm envious! Thank you and may God be with you in your travels.

if you've never been told that you are a goddess, it's time someone paid proper homage to you! The only way I can think of how to do so is by making another Mastercard offering at your shrine. If I "hit the ground running" before, I'd hate to just come to a screeching halt; I'm afraid that I fell in love with another bundle of your wares before the first one even arrived (which it did yesterday morning - very speedy!). Now that I myself feel like a goddess of my neighborhood with this beautiful garb, I'm making more sari offerings to myself (hey, it won't show up until NEXT month's card statement, right?). I'll be very busy rolling hems and sewing cholis, but it is worth your superior saris - Indian sites may set you up with the whole ready-to-wear outfit, but the quality isn't up to my picky standard (I'm a bit of an anal-retentive seamstress). Thanks to your good taste in sari selection (and U.S. availability)!

Melinda, I have to tell you that I wore my sari in public for the first time yesterday; to church!

Our priest and his wife are natives of Pakistan as are his bother and sister-in-law and their kids. So I was thoroughly examined and declared authentic! It was so fun to see their delight in this blonde American's sari! They did tell me that I should have left the starch in, though. So I washed it gently again and ironed it, and that seemed to reactivate that tenacious rice starch. I had made a big production of getting just the right jewelry and sandals, so the whole look was very beautiful, I must say. The other ladies and even men all had positive comments about it.

I will be shopping your site again for a fancier one! Good luck and blessings on your November trip.
